We are excited to announce a beautiful new litter of seven Standard Australian Shepherd puppies from River Breeze Feather Duster and Rusty. Feather is the dam and Rusty is the sire. This litter includes two blue merles — one male and one female — two red tris — one male and one female — two black tri males, and one red merle male. Each puppy will have its own page on our website as soon as we take more photos later this week. Puppies are priced between $1,150 and $1,750, with a $500 deposit to reserve.

After a lot of research and much consideration, I have decided to leave our puppies’ dewclaws on. In the past, I removed them to prevent issues like overgrowth or injuries. Now, studies show that dogs use them to grip toys and chews, and for extra stability when turning and climbing. Combined with how easy electric nail files have made maintenance, it felt like the right choice to leave them intact. None of the puppies had rear dewclaws so that won’t be an issue.

This was an incredibly hard decision, and I ended up docking four of the seven puppies. I have left tails natural before per customer request, and was happy to do so. Vets are becoming more reluctant to dock because it is increasingly considered a cosmetic and unnecessary procedure, and there are valid reasons on both sides. Personally, I have found Aussies with docked tails a little easier to live with. I had one with a full tail who would come inside absolutely covered in stickers every time he went out, and he hated having his tail brushed because it was so sensitive. My two Aussies with docked tails seemed much happier in that regard. I respect everyone’s point of view, so I am watching this litter closely to see if I notice any difference in behavior between the puppies with tails and those without. This will be a learning experience for me.

I have so many photos of Feather (I mean hundreds) and didn’t realize I hadn’t taken any of her after grooming days and stood up. So we will have to do that soon.

I have been in love with Rusty since I first saw him. He lives across the road and reminded me so much of Toby. He will come over in the evening and climb in my lap and watch TV. I was thrilled when Tara offered him for a breeding to Feather.
